The “We Always Swing” Jazz Series is pleased to welcome GRAMMY-nominated guitarist Russell Malone as this season’s “Artist-in-Residence. During his three-day stay, March 6-8, Malone, serving as the special guest artist, will work with the MU Concert Jazz Band under the direction of Arthur White in a two key settings: hosting the “Annual Children’s Concert” and performing a concert as one of our season events. Additionally, Malone, who enjoyed measurable separate stints with Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall, will conduct one of our popular, free noon-time Community Forums at the Daniel Boone Library, as well as offer a master class at The Bridge.
n June Malone was voted “2011 Guitarist of the Year” Award by the influential Jazz Journalists Associaton. Of late, when not leading his own ensembles, Malone has been part of tenor saxophone titan Sonny Rollins’ band as well as part of legendary bassist Ron Carter’s “Golden Striker Trio” with pianist Mulgrew Miller.
No stranger to the Jazz Series, Malone’s previous appearances here include leading his own ensemble, performing in duo with pianist Benny Green and participating in a cooperative called “Saturday Night Fish Fry.” Join us as we present Russell Malone, the 2011/2012 “Artist-in-Residence.
